While the role of stress was originally to help us get out of dangerous situations, the stress reactions that we tend to trigger nowadays when we encounter professional and personal problems can contribute to the development of chronic diseases. It can be hypertension, depression, insomnia, etc. Here is how to fight stress naturally!
Eat Omega-3 Fats to Get Rid of Stress
It has long been known that fish oil, and especially the omega-3 fatty acids it contains, plays a protective role against cardiovascular disease. In 2013, researchers at Michigan Technological University showed that this protective role comes from the fact that fish oil succeeds in countering the effects of stress on the heart. Indeed, the participants who consumed fish oil supplements for several weeks showed a better response to stress.
On the other hand, by studying 22 people in good health, but with a high level of LDL cholesterol, also called bad cholesterol, for 3 periods of 6 weeks, researchers from the University of Penn State found that including nuts and walnut oil (rich in omega-3) in their diet reduces blood pressure in response to anxiety. In a nutshell, eating omega-3 fats is one of the best ways to reduce stress naturally.
Meditate to Reduce Stress
According to a recent study by a team of researchers from the University of California, meditating is even more effective in overcoming stress than vacation! Another study which was carried out by a group of students supported this theory. This study consisted of asking all the participants to undergo tests that require high level of concentration. Between those tests, a part of the group followed five days of meditation, with a technique called integrative body-mind training or IBMT.
And the result was the group that followed the meditation course showed better concentration and better stress regulation after each meditation session. This study also demonstrates that it is never too late to start meditation because even a 5-day course just before a stressful episode has positive effects! It allows you to better control your breath and your emotions. Some meditation sessions even include the learning and the practice of intermittent breathing for better effects against stress and anxiety.
In conclusion, it is scientifically proven that consuming omega-3 and meditating are effective to prevent and overcome stress. You can do both and combine them with some breathing exercises if you want to live peacefully and keep a positive attitude.
